Slow town
Looking out over the Itria Valley, in the so-called Murgia dei Trulli, Cisternino is a charming town, not far from the Adriatic coast It is one of “the most beautiful towns in Italy” and has collected a series of recognitions over the years, including the orange flag of the Touring Club, and the green flag for Agriculture and being a “Slow City”.
Its beautiful historical centre, with Baroque masterpieces of Puglia, is the result of what has been defined “spontaneous architecture”. The tower of Porta Grande from the Norman-Swabian era is worth a visit: It was the entrance to the city and the statue of San Nicola still stands on top of it today. In recent years, Cisternino has become a favourite destination for meat connoisseurs because of the butchers in the Historical Centre, where it is possible to choose your own cut at the counter and eat it a few minutes later, after it has been cooked on a characteristic “stove”.
The sea
Cisternino, with its white houses and olive trees, is one of the most beautiful mediaeval towns in Puglia. A short distance from the sea, Cisternino will allow you to spend a day enjoying both culture and nature, and then take a dive into the crystal clear sea of the Adriatic.
